Many jewelers including local Kimberly Monaco Designs, who was featured a few months back, relies on the many treasures that can be found on the shores of Lake Erie - sea glass. Well even though on a positive note it's great to know that the shores are nearly litter free, but that also means a loss of these glittering treasures.
Excerpt from an article about sea glass from Starnews Online the about Lake Erie:
“Finding sea glass is like finding diamonds anymore on the beach,” said Joan Croft-Jones, a Carolina Beach watercolorist and sculptor who also makes jewelry. But the glass in most of her creations, including earrings at le Soleil and neck pieces at Wilmington Art Gallery on Castle Street, are smoothed shards she found at Lake Erie in Ohio.
Despite the discouraging lack of sea glass locally, Croft-Jones looks for pieces for herself whenever she walks on the beach.
“I guess you can buy tumblers and tumble glass and actually buy it commercially, but I prefer to find my own,” she said. “There's just something more magical when you find it yourself.”
