Wordless Wednesday: Fashion evolution - from four legs to two.

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday this week features alpacas which are a booming industry throughout Ohio.
I was inspired helping shear some alpacas this week, while I was primarily a paper pusher and organizer it was quite interesting all the work that alpaca farmers put into shearing them for us to have such a luxurious yarn for knitwear  in our lives.

Shearing the alpacas:

Sorting alpaca fiber by coarseness for the mill to make various products including yarn or rugs:

Processing alpaca fiber at a local mill:

Knitting into garments on knitting machines - home studio and industrial:

Finished alpaca apparel (Cleveland):

*Editors note that no alpacas were or are injured while being shorn, they actually are much relieved to have pounds of fiber shorn off them in preparation for the summer months.

Earth Day - Spotlight Akron Designer Horst

When I think of Earth Day and fashion I immediately think of sustainable textiles which is a subject very near and dear to my heart working with alpacas on a regular basis.  While at Kent State in the textile arts program we were very excited to have designer Horst who creates fashions out of wool felt.  Horst's couture collection includes one of a kind pieces that include dresses, accessories, jackets and much more, complete collection on the Horst Couture website.
Quote from the Kent State Museum press release on his collection in 2005:
FoThrough the action of heat, moisture, chemicals and pressure wool is made into felt. With great zeal and imagination, Horst manipulates both the wool fiber and the felted cloth in ways that defy conventions. His medium — wool — has been widely used since prehistoric times and yet few artists today choose to face its challenges. Armed with a strong love of color, sculptural shapes and the natural world, this artist reassesses primitive techniques to create a new and exciting body of work.

OhioFashionista.com Favorite Picks from Horst Couture:

Horst is from and lives in the Akron area and teaches in the Cleveland Municiple school district.

OhioFashionita's Favorite Fashion Guides

Summer is right around the corner, and many have been emailing asking what are the hot items this summer - a few have even asked if we can go shopping with them.  Well dear followers my apologies but I can't be everywhere with you so I wanted to provide you with my favorite style guides that I like to follow to help alleviate some of the stress of picking out this summers favorites.

H&M Style Guide - H&M has put together a nice flip book style of the various trends and styles to see how easily they are paired with your favorite sandals, shorts, accessories - etc.  There is not just a guide for the girls, but also the guys, there are links above to navigate between the two.

I found this gem, it's created out of tax forms with a duct tape lining holding it together.  A sweet finding to end such a stressful day, aside from tax day freebies!

Not a Gem, but a "Pearl" in the Rough

The Hidden Pearl in Cuyahoga Falls

When you think Cuyahoga Falls and vintage most people immediately think of Village Discount, or Abbey Ann's well I would like to change that thinking and introduce you to The Hidden Pearl.  Truly I would have never found this very unique thrift store if it wasn't for sheer curiosity why it was still open at 10 o'clock at night during the Italian-American Festival a year or so ago.

Let these photos from The Hidden Pearl webpage tell a story of a great little vintage store nestled into the Riverfront Square District Walking Mall.
